The Australian Digital Health Agency (the Agency) has published a series of Electronic Prescribing (EP) Conformance Profiles (CP) with incremental increases in functionality. All these profiles, except for CPv3.0, were intentionally temporary to expedite the implementation of electronic prescriptions as part of COVID-19 National Health Plan. The publication of the last conformance profile CPv3.0 on 16 April 2021 was intended to enable software developers wanting to participate in the Electronic Prescribing ecosystem to develop and release software in a safe and secure manner that mitigates as many identified hazards as possible. CPv3.0 is the only version that caters for all features of electronic prescribing conformance and removes all previously granted temporary exceptions.
All CPs prior to CPv3.0 were previously due to expire in April 2022 but were extended by the Agency to 26 November 2022 based on Industry feedback and in consultation with stakeholder groups. In extending the sunset dates the Agency also made a commitment to engage with Industry on development progress to CPv3.0 in July 2022 and October 2022 to assess progress on the implementation of Electronic Prescriptions CPv3.0.
The Agency conducted the planned July 2022 engagement one month early in response to Industry demand using a multi-faceted approach including a survey and information requests from developers. In response to feedback received and in recognition of the current state of development progress, the Agency has extended the sunset dates as follows:
For Electronic Prescriptions Conformance Profiles CPvF1.0, CPvF1.1, and CPv2.2.1 to 30 June 2023
For Electronic Prescriptions Conformance Profile CPv2.3 to 24 November 2023
It is intended that the extension of time will allow for prescribing and dispensing systems to attain conformance to CPv3.0 and to transition their client base to a CP3.0 conformant version of their software.
The Agency will engage with Industry again in October 2022 to assess progress on the implementation of Electronic Prescriptions CPv3.0.
