The My Health Record system uses document class codes and type codes as critical metadata elements to enhance the search and discovery of clinical documents. These codes function by categorising and organising documents into standardised classifications, enabling healthcare providers and patients to efficiently locate and access specific health information within the system.
Document class codes typically represent broader categories such as pathology reports or advance care information, while type codes offer more granular classification within those categories, like Goals of Care documents. These codes are derived from international health informatics standards, such as Logical Observation Identifiers Name and Code (LOINC) clinical document ontology document types or National Clinical Terminology and Information Service (NCTIS) codes to support Australian requirements.
The My Health Record Document Type register is available in the Agency’s GitHub repository.
