This standard specifies the structure and semantics of a clinical document for exchange. It includes requirements for packaging Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) documents in HL7 messages.
A CDA document may include text, images, sounds and other multimedia content. CDA documents are encoded in Extensible Markup Language (XML) and can be transferred within a message or exist independently. This standard does not cover the format of clinical documents outside of the exchange context.
