This standard defines the physical and logical requirements for a passive-backscatter, Interrogator-talks-first (ITF), radio-frequency identification (RFID) system operating in the 860 MHz – 930 MHz frequency range. Such a system requires interrogators (also known as readers) and Tags (also known as labels or transponders).

This protocol specifies the physical interactions between interrogators and Tags, along with the logical operating procedures and commands between interrogators and Tags.
