This standard describes messages for the transfer of data between analytical instruments (AIs) and laboratory information systems (LISs) within a clinical laboratory. It applies to clinical chemistry and biochemistry, haematology, toxicology, microbiology, virology and immunology. It is not applicable to blood transfusion and blood banks.
The standard covers the specification of character-based messages used by communicating parties and the syntax in which they are communicated. It does not cover the exchange graphical information or message transport mechanisms.
