This standard specifies the fundamental characteristics of the computational model implemented by the service architecture layer architectural layer of an information system. The specification provides a comprehensive and integrated storage of common enterprise data and support the fundamental business processes of the healthcare organisation.

This specification is formal, complete and nonambiguous enough to allow implementers to derive an efficient system design in the specific technological environment which will be selected for the physical implementation.

This document is not a complete specification of all possible interfaces that might be necessary for any requirement of any healthcare enterprise. Instead, it specifies a set of characteristics identified as fundamental and common to all healthcare organisations.
