This document describes Classification Markup Language (ClaML), which formally represents the content and hierarchical structure of healthcare classification systems for the safe exchange and distribution of data and structure between organisations and dissimilar software products.

The scope of healthcare classification systems covered by this document is constrained to traditional paper-based systems (such as the International Classification of Diseases, ICD-10) and systems built according to categorial structures and a cross thesaurus (such as the International Classification for Nursing Practice, ICNP).

Most of the notes and examples in this document relate to the ICD, but they can also be applied to other similar classification systems.
