The Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) identifies regulated healthcare products (pharmaceuticals and medical devices) that may be priced, ordered or invoiced at any point in the supply chain, and about which there is a need to retrieve predefined information. The Healthcare GTIN Allocation Rules help industry make consistent decisions about how to manage the unique identification of these product based on consideration of the product, its labelling and its packaging.
The Healthcare GTIN Allocation Rules help ensure that the right product is supplied. They support operational efficiencies in the exchange of product information; the smooth operation of global supply chains; and global regulatory compliance. Overall costs are minimised while efficiencies and patient safety improve when all partners in the supply chain adhere to the rules.
These rules are part of the GS1 system of standards and were developed in accordance with the GS1 Global Standards Management Process (GSMP).
