This instruction manual for the Tenth Revision of the International Statistical
Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) contains
guidelines for recording and coding, together with much new material on
practical aspects of the classification’s use. This material is presented as a
separate volume so users can refer to the classification (Volume 1) and the instructions for its use at the same time. This manual provides a basic description of the ICD, practical instructions for mortality and morbidity coders, and guidelines for the presentation and interpretation of data. It is not intended to provide detailed training in the use of the ICD. The material needs to be
accompanied by formal courses of instruction on the use of the ICD that allow extensive practice on sample records and discussion of problems.
