IHE Quality, Research and Public Health Technical Framework Supplement – Vital Records Death Reporting (VRDR)

Vital statistics data aid decision-makers in setting policies, directing resources, managing problems and identifying emerging health trends. The provider caring for a patient at the time of death is responsible for reporting medical details on death. Some of the information to be reported exists in the electronic health record. This supplementary resource defines multiple approaches to capturing death reporting information from provider systems, including messaging, document exchange and a Retrieve Form for Data Capture-based approach. The resource also defines the transactions and documents that may be exchanged between jurisdictions and national statistics agencies.
