This document defines an Application Program Interface (API) between 2 software applications:

- the hosting system, which provides the second application with data (such as a set of images and related data)

- the hosted application, which analyses the data and may return results to the first application.

The API standardises the data interchange between software components on the same system so that hosted application programs can plug into hosting systems.

This document is one of 22 parts to the DICOM standard.

Main sections:

- Application hosting overview

- Hosted application life cycle

- Interfaces

- Data types and structures

- Data exchange model conventions
