The use of returnable transport items (RTIs), such as pallets, is increasing in modern supply chains as companies seek to reduce costs, increase handling efficiencies and reduce their environmental impact. Pallet producers and pallet-pool service providers are exploring integrating Electronic Product Code (EPC) and radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology into pallets to identify individual pallets. This guideline defines the appropriate GS1 Identification Key for identifying a pallet; the specifications needed to use EPC and RFID tagged pallets in different use cases; and the data structure of the tag.
