This document provides guidelines for exchanging information about the use of medical devices on patients and/or implantation of medical devices in patients. The goal of the Unique Device Identifier (UDI) Pattern is to enable semantic interoperability regardless of the information exchange standard used (for example, HL7 V2.x, HL7 V3 messages or CDA, HL7 FHIR). This document sets the overarching guidelines for all working groups that need to exchange the unique device identification, but does not give guidance for specific implementations.
