Health Level Seven (HL7) is a not-for-profit, standards developing organisation that provides frameworks and related standards for the exchange, integration, sharing, and retrieval of electronic health information. HL7 standards provide one of the key elements to enable interoperability through their frameworks by defining the methods and structure which is used to share clinical information. By enabling data to be more easily shared and reused their standards support improvements to clinical practice and can often also positively impact the management, delivery and evaluation of health services.
As one of the newer HL7 standards, FHIR, or Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources, has become an important focus on the greater sharing of health related data in Australia.

Australia has a FHIR Management Framework to guide development of FHIR standards for Australia.
There is also currently a local FHIR Accelerator developing standards for Australia, known as "Sparked" which may be of interest.
