This messaging specification describes standards for the exchange of patient and resident preferences related to food and medication to support communication of these preferences between different systems and providers. This Universal standard provides a better way to communicate patient food and medication preferences among applications and providers. It will help avoid situations where preferences are reported as allergies in order to avoid disliked foods or avoid medications that cause unpleasant side-effects.

Each entry is classified as food or medication and indicated as a positive or negative preference. Other information includes the stated reason for the preference such as religious, cultural, ethnic or moral beliefs.
