HL7 Version 3 Standard: Orders; Diet and Nutrition, Release 1

This standard provides a messaging specification aimed at standardising the electronic transmission and exchange of nutrition orders in health care facilities across the continuum of care. It includes nutrition orders for oral diets, enteral nutrition (tube feeding and infant formula requirements) and nutritional supplements. The computerised food and nutrition management systems used by dietetics and food and nutrition services departments in hospitals and long-term care facilities depend on HL7 interfaces to exchange data with hospital information systems, electronic health record systems, and computerised physician order entry systems.

Parenteral nutrition is outside the scope of this standard, as orders for it require coordination with the pharmacy domain.
