This implementation guide defines SMART patterns for client applications to authorise, authenticate and integrate with Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR)-based data systems. The patterns are based on the Internet Engineering Task Force's (IETF's) OAuth 2.0 authorisation framework. SMART App Launch authorises a user-facing app to connect to a FHIR server and allows for launch context such as sharing the currently selected patient with the app, based on a user's session or selection at launch time. SMART Backend Services authorises a headless or automated client application to connect to a FHIR server without direct involvement of a user.
