HL7's Version 2 messaging standard is the workhorse of electronic data exchange in the clinical domain, and is a widely implemented standard around the world. This messaging standard allows the exchange of clinical data between healthcare systems. It is designed to support data exchange in both central patient care systems and more distributed environments where data resides in departmental systems. Version 2.9 represents HL7's latest development in the line of Version 2 Standards that dates back to 1989.
