Standards Development Organisation

GS1 is a global, not-for-profit standards development organisation that develops and maintains standards providing a common language to identify, capture and share supply chain data that ensures important information is accessible, accurate and easy to understand. Mostly commonly known for identifying products such as medicines or medical devices, their standards help to tell the story behind products; where they originated, what they contain and where they have been during their supply-chain journey.

Their wide range of standards enable the identification and data capture of key elements within the care process. This includes supporting the validation of identification of patients and staff, products, places, organisations, assets, documents and more. Their sharing standards support the digitisation of the supply chain and access to product information. The semantic use of GS1 standards and data capture technologies ensures accuracy of identity enabling the linkage of the physical and digital processes with greater levels of accuracy. GS1 standards are often included within regulations related to products to enable identification and traceability.
